KUALA LUMPUR: An imam was charged at a Magistrate's Court here for allegedly cheating a company manager of RM3,800 in exchange for a marriage certificate.

Mohd Mustakim Ithnin, 36, however, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out before Magistrate Tawfiq Affandy Chin here Thursday .

He was accused of cheating 40-year-old Fazal Mohd Hussain by deceiving the victim to believe that he could obtain a valid Malaysian marriage certificate, causing Fazal to make a payment of RM2,500, which was handed over by hand, and another RM1,300 banked into his bank account. He allegedly committed the offence at an eatery at Batu 4 1/2, Jalan Ipoh in Sentul between Oct 7 and Oct 18,2019.The charge under Section 420 of the Penal Code carries a maximum imprisonment of 10 years and whipping and can be fined if convicted.However, the accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a lower amount on grounds that he had to support his two children.We're sorry, this article is unavailable at the moment.
