When number plate recognition was introduced police patrols were cut. Will this be an excuse to cut police on foot. Let crime happen and chase up perpetrators (only 1 in 5 is accurate) after the event and present crime is being controlled.

. Accuracy is *not* the issue! .

What could possibly go wrong? At what point do the strategies that we adopt to protect liberty become a threat to liberty itself?

Biometric passports & now cameras. Despite all assurances given, once this system's on, it will self-manage & won't be turned off. The ever-powerful State is slowly but surely eroding freedoms & taking us to an Orwellian way-of-life. Spying will prevail. I fear for our children!

MrTomWisdom I spoke to someone once who approved of this. Said government should know where every citizen was & what they were doing. He was a Neo-Nazi living in communist Russia.

In theory it’s supposed to only store and remember a geometric profile of your face not an actual picture. But, nobody has given them permission for this, unlike when you agree to the terms of apples Face ID as an example

Did you vote Tory, because you liked their Get Tough On Crime message? Well, you can't complain now. Or can you? [ Met Police ]

The really guilty ones will just start wearing masks or scarves over their faces . It’s a pointless exercise 🤷‍♀️

MrTomWisdom 🤓 meh, if it were up to me, every humans dna and fingerprints, baby footprints, etc would be captured- it would stop a lot of crime, just the way I see it of course, but meh - we’re obsessed with watching each other, why should governments be any different? 😋

Are these the facial recognition cameras that struggle to recognise faces, like the ones trialed in other countries with incredibly low success rates?

Better many more human policemen/women in the streets than those Orwellian weapons of mass totalitarianism!

Lets just hope that we don't get a far right government in power that might use it to arrest anyone that disagrees with them.

i hope its useful for telling people of colour apart .... lessons learnt from the self driving nonsense they put in those driver-less cars ...just saying.

I support the use of this technology in specific cases such as in and around a large concert venue using a database of known terror suspect on a watch list If you oppose this technology what is your alternative solution? Have you already forgotten?

Can_Libertarian This is the problem right here, not how they obtain the data so much as this: When one enters a store/ private property, they leave the public square, say, and consent to recorded upon entry. Does one consent to being recorded when they enter the public square? NO!

Good.

So metpoliceuk hate the public, hate listening to the public, and are against the public in all forms and want to steal private data without permission. Got it.

Live cameras!

Hideous in its own right, but also the thin end of the wedge. Assurances given that it will be used sparingly and obviously, and not connected with this and that. Bollocks. It will become pervasive.

To begin?! Please, it's been in use and they've been using it for a while now.
