President Donald Trump said he’s open to new witnesses at his impeachment trial before immediately backtracking. 9News

US President Donald Trump has said he's open to new witnesses at his impeachment trial - a major demand by Democratic prosecutors - before immediately backtracking by suggesting it could never happen.

Trump, who was in Davos, Switzerland, for an economic conference, seemed at one point to break with Republican opposition to Democratic motions to immediately call witnesses and subpoena documents.

Historic day in Washington as Donald Trump impeachment trial begins in the SenateSenators are expected to vote on a resolution setting the rules for the trial. I'll lay odds the impeachment will go nowhere and Trump will be re-elected for a second term. Clinton has just proved how stupidly divided the Democrats are. Sadly, like Labor in Australia and Labour in the UK, they offer no vision, or leadership, just rehashed tired politicians. The impeachment 'acquittal' has started 🥳🇺🇸😉🇦🇺 What a farce

Dems 'aware of the math' in the Senate as impeachment begins | Sky News AustraliaCNN reporter Karin Caifa says Democrats are 'obviously aware of the math in the Senate' ahead of the impeachment trial. \n\n'It's a much higher threshold for them to meet than just a simple majority - they would require two-thirds of the vote to remove him as president,' Ms Caifa said.\n\n'There is a long game strategy from the Democrats as they try to position themselves and go through their primaries to decide who they choose to run for president.' \n\nImage: AP The Democrats are also aware that the House Impeachment case was a political hitjob, nothing more. Now the heat has reversed and they squeal.

Trump impeachment trial set to begin | Sky News AustraliaThe United States Senate is set to commence, on Tuesday (local time), the third impeachment trial in the nation's history, considering whether US President Donald Trump committed high crimes and misdemeanours.\n\nA disagreement still remains as to what the trial should look like, as Democrats continue to push for witness testimony. \n\nThe White House had unveiled its legal defence with the US president's team arguing the Democrats wrongly identified abuse of power as an impeachable offence and that the impeachment process itself was 'irredeemably flawed'.\n\nThey will also argue there was no evidence to support claims that the president threatened to withhold aid from Ukraine until it announced an investigation into Joe Biden's son. \n\nDemocratic Senator Chris Coons said 'this is going to be a complex trial with a lot of issues'. \n\nImage: Associated Press \n\nVideo: CNN
