BREAKING: Donald Trump’s impeachment trial now looks set to start within days – but one major unresolved detail has both parties concerned.

The Senate will transform into an impeachment court as early as Thursday, although significant proceedings wouldn’t begin until next Tuesday after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Although it still hasn’t been decided if witnesses will be called to give evidence.

“I’m very proud and honoured that these seven members, distinguished members, have accepted this serious responsibility … to protect and defend, for the people, defending our democracy.” Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announces impeachment managers for the articles of impeachment against US President Donald Trump on Capitol Hill January 15, 2020, in Washington, DC. The Speaker addressed this delay on Wednesday, arguing it has been the Democrats’ “friend” because it allowed for the discovery of more evidence.

Senate Republicans also signalled they would reject the idea of simply voting to dismiss the articles of impeachment against Mr Trump, as the US President has suggested. Mr McConnell agreed he does not have the votes to do that. “There is little or no sentiment in the Republican conference for a motion to dismiss,” Mr McConnell said Tuesday. “Our members feel we have an obligation to listen to the arguments.

At Tuesday’s private GOP lunch, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky warned that if witnesses are allowed, defence witnesses could also be called. He and other Republicans want to subpoena Mr Biden and his son, Hunter, who served on the board of a gas company in Ukraine, Burisma, while his father was vice president. Mr McConnell is drafting an organising resolution that will outline the steps ahead. Approving it will be among their first votes of the trial, likely next Tuesday.

Well written piece. Interesting times. Buckle up buttercups 🇺🇸

Wow, it only took Nervous Nancy a month or so of humiliation to finally work out that she had literally none of the 'leverage' over the senate that the knowalls in the media told her she had. She is so terrible at her job.

'Completely bogus': Cambodia begins treason trial of Opposition LeaderThe trial of Cambodian Opposition Leader Kem Sokha on treason charges is underway, drawing condemnation from rights groups. Sounds like another country I have heard of. Perhaps the USA? Hun Sen does not brook opposition of any kind. This show trial serves three purposes- to punish Mr Kem for becoming a popular leader, to act as a warning to any nascent opposition parties and to send a strong message to Sam Rainsy on the folly of returning to Cambodia.
