Meanwhile at the Kooyong Classic, Maria Sharapova and Laura Siegemund decided to call their game off after almost three hours on court due to a combination of smoke and heat. The umpire said the conditions were behind the call to stop play after almost two and a half hours.
"Both players are feeling the smoke so we are going to stop the match at this point," the umpire announced. "It's a little bit unfortunate … It's been a little bit rough especially in the second set, we can more feel it," Siegemund said. Sharapova said she felt a cough coming on as the match stretched past two hours with temperatures on court around 40 degrees.
"I started feeling a cough coming toward the end of the second set but I've been sick for a few weeks so I thought that had something to do with it," Sharapova told SBS after the match."We were out there for over two hours so from a health standpoint it's the right call from officials."The Australian Open proper begins on Monday and tournament organisers had to delay the start of qualifying this morning for an hour due to the haze.
AustralianOpen I'm sorry but the decision to go ahead with qualifying was poor judgement. This is also as poor as Sydney going ahead with the fireworks while Australian bushfires were on. AustralianOpen has just put Australia in the spotlight again for the wrong reasons.
Not sure it’s fair to use the word “quit” here...
How dimb are the players and Tennis Assoc allowing play in the worst pollution this country has ever seen-absolutely hazardous reading in excess of 500 on the index.
Why are they making them play in the smoke?
