A driver has been charged over a crash that killed Forest Fires Management worker and father-of-two Mat Kavanagh, 43, who was fighting the Victorian bushfires.

Alexandra father-of-two Mat Kavanagh, 43, and a colleague were working as part of the bushfire responseMr Kavanagh, a passenger in the ute, died at the scene while the driver, a 47-year-old Narbethong man, was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said that driver had since been remanded in custody to appear at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on April 28, 2020. "Our thoughts are with Mat’s colleagues and family, including his wife and children – Jude, his wife, and Ruben and Kate, his children," she said.
