PETALING JAYA: Former Court of Appeal judge Datuk Seri Hishamudin Yunus has criticised the police for supposedly siding with those who violated the constitutional rights of the people when dealing with racial and religious issues, reported Sin Chew Daily.

Citing a cancelled gathering by educationist group Dong Jiao Zong to discuss the teaching of Jawi calligraphy in vernacular schools and the removal of Chinese New Year decorations at SMK Pusat Bandar Puchong 1, he said there were elements of the police actions which “favoured the offenders”.

Speaking at a function to launch the report on the Administration of Matters Pertaining to Islam by the G25 group of eminent Malays over the weekend, Hishamudin questioned whether the police protected the freedom of speech and assembly of those who were concerned about the teaching of Jawi.

Although the meeting was called off, Hishamudin said that student groups held an anti-Dong Jiao Zong rally in Kuala Lumpur several days later. He said the same thing happened at the school, where the school administrators were advised by the police to take down the festive decorations following a protest by the Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia vice-president and lawyer Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz.

Although the situation subsided after several Cabinet ministers arrived and reinstalled the decorations, Hishamudin said the police’s actions had again sent the wrong message.

Malaysians have waited so long. No more tiada guru: enough is enough. It's been going on for 30+ years: She should have sued the government for failing to ensure a teacher present in class. Gen X and before may call this behaviour entitled but I'm glad millennials and after are entitled. It means we'll fight for what should have been done in the first place.
