For Weinstein Victims, Hope and Anxiety as a Historic Trial Nears: "We're All Prepared for an Onslaught"Ahead of the Jan. 6 court date, some of the more than 80 women who have accused the disgraced mogul of sexual misconduct plan to attend in person as they gird themselves for attacks by his lawyers:"Our presence is important right now."
"Will it be a strong message for us all to be there? Would that be helpful? It might be a good thing for him to have to see us." In the fall, a group of more than 20 of Weinstein’s accusers, who call themselves the Silence Breakers, hired a publicist through Time’s Up to share for the trial: former Joe Biden spokesperson Kendra Barkoff Lamy at SKDKnickerbocker in Washington. “I believe that our presence is important right now; it’s just about supporting each other," says Rosanna Arquette, who plans to attend the first day of the trial as well as the days when Sciorra testifies.
Of the many men called out during the #MeToo movement, Weinstein is the first to stand trial in a criminal courtroom. And while allegations against Weinstein have been lodged around the world, from Los Angeles to London to Cannes, New York prosecutors are so far the only ones to bring charges, freighting the case with even more consequence for his accusers and others impacted by #MeToo.
THR Enablers and promoters of Harvey and other predators, specially the ones that are in power position create the unsafe, hostile environment for victims. And the cycle is endless.
THR You want to use Harvey Weinstein as an excuse to change the legal system and standards of proof and believability and skepticism for EVERYONE -- poor black males to the front of the line for this new fangled JUSTICE! Right? I object. No, you change it for him and those like him.
THR It is a good question, how does the legal system need to 'catch up' in order to prevent HW's decades of abuse from continuing being normal. But, if a belated case finally brought yields a poor outcome, that's not an excuse to change the whole entire legal system for EVERYONE.
THR Juries are not supposed to convict despite insufficient evidence, to somehow MAKE UP for how Weinstein used loopholes and other tactics to prevent there from being a good legal case in the first place. And then what? All poor black men - automatically presumed guilty too?
THR The actress who says 'If Weinstein is acquitted, that means the legal system hasn't caught up' is full of it. Given what he is charged with, if a jury doesn't agree, that's fine. The legal system hasn't caught up, inasmuch as he isn't being charged for how he used the mafia.
