As Beijing increasingly flexes its muscle in Hong Kong, there have been growing concerns about judicial independence

It was an unusual assignment to start with, a retired chief justice of Canada sitting on the bench of Hong Kong’s highest court. The timing made it extraordinary.

“The law is very rigorously applied. It’s a very high level of judging,” she said in an interview Monday. “The court is independent.” McLachlin, who retired in 2017 as the longest-serving chief justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, is the first Canadian to sit on the court, which routinely brings in judges from countries with similar common-law systems. She was also one of the first two women to fill the role, along with Baroness Brenda Hale, outgoing president of the UK’s Supreme Court.

Last month, the foreign affairs committee of the UK’s House of Commons warned that sending British judges to Hong Kong could create a “reputational risk” if the country looks “complicit in supporting and participating in a system that is undermining the rule of law.” The committee recommended the government consult with Canada and other countries who also supply judges to the court.

China’s National People’s Congress deliberately interpret HK laws without request from HK court, n while cases are on going in HK, this violated the Basic Law n definitely interfered HK court n thus undermined HK’s jurisdiction system.

Too bad they’re not immune to pressure from the PMO.

Beverley McLachlin was the 1st Chief Justice to violate the sacred rule of separation between Court & PMO when she attempted to call PM Harper & interfere in a court appointment. Bev McLachlin politicized the Supreme Court. She's a disgrace.

China wants a foot hold in North America. JustinTrudeau along with all the bleeding heart virtue signaling so called tolerant Leftists are giving it to them on a silver platter. Personally, I’ll never bow to China or any other dictator. 🖕Democracy FreeSpeech BanHuawei

Always a good time to remember stephenharper sold our sovereignty to China

This woman is a disgrace.

What a shame! What will you say when an ex-chief justice cannot discern what is right and wrong!

More insanity from the hate-filled fascists on the left.

How much is she being paid?

But not from Americans?

Screw your, lady.

How naive can she possibly be. This was our “Chief Justice”.

I would say the Chinese Communist Party got to her. Question is when. Could explain all the rollback of Charter rights when she was CJC.

'Oh good, Canada's former Chief Justice (who legalized sex acts with animals in Canada) is now working for the Hong Kong courts. She says everything is fine. Beijing only uses its power to twist HK court decisions 'fairly sparingly'.' p.p. TheRealKeean

Yeah sure. She’s not following a script

Sure we are! Justin would drop and pay oral homage to Dictator Pooh at his demand!!

Just another privileged elite spouting nonsense about China. China is waging a war of misinformation and we have been more than happy to meet them half way

Why does she not retire, she is a goof just a government hack imo

...and the budget will balance itself.

And the earth is flat
