NSTletters: More than 1,500 protesters have been arrested in India in the last 10 days, while 4,000 people had been detained and released.

Reuters:THE Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisation is concerned the about the citizenship law protests in India.According to international media,many feel that the Citizenship Amendment Act discriminates against Muslims and violates the country’s secular constitution by making religion a test for citizenship.

More than 1,500 protesters have been arrested in India in the last 10 days, while 4,000 people had been detained and released.This is worrying as it is a prelude to a bigger security action after more than 100 students were injured. The students of Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi and Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh have been protesting since the law was passed.Nearly 100 students were detained following the violence, although university authorities said the students did not take part in the burning of vehicles.

Muslim groups, opposition parties and rights activists in India claim the CAA is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist agenda to margin-alise 200 million Muslims in India.
