In important ways, the presidency of Barack Obama set the stage for Donald Trump, Kevin M. Cruse and Julian E. Zelizer write in usatodayopinion.

As social media like Twitter and Facebook weaken our filters, our public commons has become even more of a wild west of information and disinformation. Again, the breakdown of our media ecosystem was well underway during the Obama presidency, but he tried to fight it. He refused to make decisions based on the “noise” of the day and was careful in the ways that he entered into the public eye.

And he has not been alone. Political organizations and voting blocs who were not happy with the direction of the country under Obama have rallied to Trump as a champion and a corrective, and he has been happy to play the part. While Obama welcomed social changes, eventually embracing even the legalization of gay marriage, Trump has instead tapped into the anxieties of religious conservatives.

In many ways, Obama’s America and Trump’s America feel like separate nations. But in truth they are bound to one another, a reminder that Newton’s Third Law extends beyond physics and into politics: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

usatodayopinion The only thing is it’s not an “equal and opposite reaction.” Trying to be bipartisan and inclusive of Republicans, for some insane reason, created an outsize incoherent response. There is nothing equal, at all.

usatodayopinion Yeh! His nose attacked the fist of the Right.

usatodayopinion Kevin M. Cruse and Julian E. Zelizer clearly show the 'progressive' and media bias, as for most normal people, the Obama era and the Trump era are not all that different, except, perhaps, for people who found jobs since 2016.

KevinMKruse usatodayopinion There you go Democrats Trump is your fault!

KevinMKruse usatodayopinion So KevinMKruse an equal and opposite reaction to a centrist African American president is a completely unhinged white supremacist kleptocracy?
