How far does a $50K salary go when you’re starting out? Help from parents means a recent law-school graduate has affordable rent in South Boston and no student debt.

How far does a $50K salary go when you’re starting out? It depends a lot on where you live.

Recent graduates in entry-level jobs will make an average of $51,347 annually in 2019, according to recruiting firm Korn Ferry. In this series, millennial workers tell The Wall Street Journal about what it’s like to live on roughly $50,000 a year in their city. From Oklahoma City to Detroit, they share their living expenses, whether they’re able to save, and what they do for fun.

Everyone knows $50k/yr is not enough to live on when you’re in a major metropolitan city. Rent alone is at least $3k/mo. By the time you take taxes off the $50k you bring home $3500/mo not even enough to pay utilities & groceries after rent is paid.

Her parents paid for her undergrad, half of law school tuition not covered by her scholarship, they own the property she rents from and she drives her mother's old car ......that's been completely paid off...

Help from parents- Let me stop you right there

What’s the point of these articles? There are like 4 a week and they are never useful, practice, or informative.

Graduating college with no student debt? You've already cut out most of the country as your demographic. Where's the article on crippling student debt with 35k a year because it's what you could find? Let's toss in how they'll save for retirement on a gig with no 401k.

What’s the purpose of this article? I read it twice, and still don’t get it. 99% of us can’t relate....

I file more bankruptcies than almost anyone in Kentucky and have prepared thousands of budgets at all income levels as part of that process. Happy to break down numbers here if you want.

This is a silly article... I don’t begrudge her debt-free college or parental help, but this girl’s subsidized experience is not useful to anyone else at her age with her salary ...

Despite Boston is not as expensive as New York or San Francisco, there's a spike in its living cost during recent years, $50K won't go far if you're not willing to make some sacrifices. I would suggest moving into another city with very low crime rate but much cheaper rent.

Help parents and poor people in US? Sorry? What? Uhmmmm ?....

Kudos to this tweet for at least acknowledging the help from the parents. A lot of these kinds of stories bury that or don't mention it all (until you probe deeper). But it would be cool if some of these stories actually focused on people who didn't have help.

Like the article, Catherines replies to questions of reporter were honest and sincere. Thank you for sharing

POTUS managed on less than $50k , and then he got $400 million from his daddy, tax free... still wondering if he’s managed to pay off his student loan? Just kidding, POTUS doesn’t pay his debts

...... help from parents ....

That's some privilege among their reporters, editors or both that blinds WSJ and NYT from conceiving of archetypes for 'stories' like this who don't start their working lives in big cities making $40K a year.

Escaping poverty is so much harder than Americans think ...

50k sounds like a alot toe, but what do I know. Way beyond my reach.

She’s not starting out on $50k a year if she has lots of additional help.

yeah now do $40k with $50k in debt while supporting a sibling or elderly family member. you people sell fucking fairy tales

Try vancouver.... she doesnt stand a chance.

I want to hear you react to this Stoehrst

So.... not far enough?

“Yes, lets follow the most privileged Americans as they wallow about making only $50,000 right out of school”. “That’ll be what people will care about!”.

That's one helluva good initial starting out salary.

I've never made $50k in my entire life. To me $50k would be a dream come true. Just got to $40k last year when my entire department was outsourced to some company in Barbados. Now, I'm praying I'll get a job that pays $14/hr; that's $200 less each week.

US federal minimum wage has been $7.25 for a decade.

This really isn't $50K. Not knocking her, she's getting considerable help from her parents.

Ridiculous

I care why?

If our economy truly risen to the highest, so should be our wages!

The same complaint! The longer women wait for children, the more likely expensive medical care is needed. 50,000 does not allow family, i.e. mother, father, grandfather, grandmother, husband, children, home, etc...

Who is this article useful for? Is there some massive class of law grads that are debt free right out of school I am unaware of?

Wait what? This is not relatable take away the parents and you may relate to the common American

So, it doesn't? Shocker that.

Ooh, now do 36K and no trust fund

'Colloquially known as Southie' was that a legit quote though? 😂😂😂😂

And this is why we say “Eat the Rich.”

my god what a pathetic generation

When your article comes pre-mocked. Great work, WSJ.

Lord help the people find their brains

she is almost definitely going to be accepting 50k+ from her parents for the down payment and mortgage, i guarantee it.

“Help from parents” 🙄 Go home , ya drunk.

HER PARENTS OWN THE BUILDING

So, not far enough then to make it on your own. Gotcha.

You’re a bunch of hacks

You can do this on 30k/year too jsyk

Will you eventually do one of these puff-pieces about a person surviving on $50k /yr in a Big City where their family ISN’T covering the shortfall? Post-taxes that’s about $30k left to spend. Go find THAT person, and write your story. It’ll read a little bit differently.

Can you count?

That's not starting out with $50k a year, is it?

This sort of white whine does not age well.

“How far does $50k go when it’s more than $50k?”

How far does a salary go when it is supplemented? Much further!!!

I fully believe that these pieces are only written to keep their parents from unsubscribing to your content.

HELP FROM PARENTS

So this doesn't actually say anything about starting out on a 50k salary if your parents are kicking in to cover so much more than that 50k would cover.

Isn’t it curious how almost every student that manages their finances well enough to avoid crushing debt *just happens* to have... rich parents that pay their bills? I’m sure there’s a hidden message there, but can’t quite put my finger on it

Lucky her. Now let’s cancel all student debt

'How far does a 50k salary plus unlimited free money from parents go' would evidently not have fit into this tweet

So good to see a well deserving 'Riches to Riches' story these days... too many about the homeless and lack of affordable healthcare.....

To just get by, it helps to be rich. Cool.

Christ, you have no idea what an average person's life is like, huh? Really looking forward to seeing you at the guillotine extravaganza

Why do these journalists keep pushing out articles literally nobody else can relate to

This is actually quite insulting.

This is offensive.

In other words, how far does a rich parent's salary go when you're starting out?

Terrible article.

What was the purpose of this interview and article. Like literally how is this helpful information to the public

Stop writing this story.

how far do three bottle caps and a paperclip go? help from an ancient cache of their ancestors' pirate treasure means Red Beard Jack can afford a studio apartment and never comes up short on bribe money for the town guard

She's garbage. There is nothing eloquent to say.

You guys suck for this article

Is this some kind of joke?

I moved to Southie in 1998 and left in 2016. The young people I saw living there when I left were my age when I moved in. There was zero chance any of them could afford to live there without help. Apartments tripled in rent during my time there.

Must be nice

I'm college educated w/ professional experience and I can't find a job in my industry, let alone in my area, that pays 25k a year and offers healthcare lol

And that’s why I’ve not pursued my law school dream. “Help from parents” seems to be how to afford it in the long run.

I started in 1962 with $50/wk, and lived.

This is ridiculous. I don’t begrudge this woman anything, but the financial model you’re proposing is to get financial assistance & a nice rental property in an expensive city from your parents? Why didn’t the rest of us think of that?!?

Here' a better snapshot of the real millennial plight:

Roommates and ramen noodles help too...

wow what’s the secret

Did you actually read what you just wrote? The first three words in your second sentence indicate that you can't possibly be accurately answering the question in your first sentence.

I feel like reporting this for being utter garbage omg read the fucking room.

what's the fucking point of publishing this?

These pieces are why 'OK Boomer' exists.

OH MAN, IF ONLY I WAS BORN RICH, THEN I WOULDNT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS AND PAPERS COULD RIGHT ABOUT ME ALLLLLL THE TIME. JUST GET RICH, POOR PEOPLE.

huh, good to know. next time i'm starting out i'll be sure to budget for rich parents. stupid me

My kid graduated from college, we pay their school loans, life/health/car insurance, & phone bill, they pay $800 a month for 1 bedroom of a 2 bedroom apt in a rural community, has a $300 car payment, pays their own utilities, can't afford cable, & makes $50K.

I made the story honest I'll take my Pulitzer in the mail

Helpful. 🙄

So not living on $50k a year. Smdh.

“Help from parents” is doing a lot of work here

Sit and spin, WSJ.

Oh rad. They pay $500/mo in rent and have no student debt. Very relatable and a great representation of young people today. Awesome job.

Okay but my parents are nearing 'retirement age' with no retirement savings and my mother is disabled. My father in law has Alzheimer's. So how far does that salary go when you're supporting your parents instead?

And how far does it go when you DON’T have an inheritance or millionaire parental support? ewarren and BernieSanders could answer this. IncomeInequality RiggedSystem

This is a joke, right?

How do these articles keep getting written

and reunite together and get things done quickly together again. So Americans will be able to live better, less worry, build America together again for a peaceful in order society to live for freedoms & equality of opportunities as a civilized, safe, prosperous, united America.

$50000 payroll can live better if without dramatic inflation from starting. Accumulated job experiences & move on can be paid better or much better. Education can help building America efficiently & live better when time goes by. Let’s reunite together again by grace and decency

for average income families to live better. Bring envying atmosphere won’t solve better life for long runs in America’s own established Capitalism systems. Sanctuary kindness neither help obeying laws, nor help poor Americans to live better by building America together.

I guess r country should govern by Foundation & Constitution to settle the principles of freedoms, entrepreneurship spirit and equality of opportunities. Correct policies will help establish more job markets. Dramatically increasing minimum wage won’t solve the massive inflation

You deserve to be roasted for this crap

So a $50K salary goes far when your parents pay for everything. Got it.

Everyone’s mad at her $500 rent but the punchline of the article is when she calls her $700 seasonal ski pass an investment.

So not only does she live in an apartment that her parents own, but she splits the mortgage equally with a roommate, even though only she is going to benefit from the equity that generates? This may be the most clueless 'how to make it as a starving Millennial' piece yet.

I think you meant to say 'It depends a lot on who your parents are '

jfc

Why do you people feel the need to publish this exact same flavor of irrelevant misleading crap every 6 months?

More importantly, how are you only making 50k after law school?

Wsj last headline is going to be 'I see you made 2 spelling errors'

I live in Nashville and pay more for my mortgage on a townhome style residence than this lady paid... in Boston. I also have student debt, and I didn't spring for a law degree.

Wow very wise of her to live in her parents apartment building

LOL

My Son, a lawyer & grad student lives on 33,000 a year in Boston. No help from mommy & daddy for that young man.

This is a crock of shit! Yes, if my parents paid between $1000 & $1500 each month for housing & half my law school tuition, I'd be comfortable too.

$33K to live on while a medical resident in Manhattan, 1996. No student loans, but no help with finances as soon a earning salary after medical school, age 28. First time living on my own without roommate, studio apt $1100/mo. No frills or savings on that!

People actually pay you to subscribe to read to articles like this about someone who graduated with no student debt because parents paid tuition and has an incredibly cheap apartment because her parents own it?

Beyond worthless.

$50k to start? Must be nice.

Her parents own the building

$500 rent in southie very relatable thx wsj

: 'How do you live in Boston on $50K/yr? Have rich parents pay for it.'

so weird that whenever wsj publishes one of these it turns out a few paragraphs in that the person enjoys some absurd cost-of-living privilege that 99.9% of people can't access

Why do you do this every week

This is laughable. The other indirect way wealthy parents help is to be the safe base to retreat to when things fall apart. It’s a helleva lot easier to be a brash entrepreneur when you’ve always got a soft landing at your parents’ place when that app fails.

$500 a month in rent? that would barely cover my weed bill. Please . Also the girl is decked in LL bean and black fingernail polish, everything I’ve heard about Boston must be true

This is trash. She pays less for her rent in BOSTON than I do in NEBRASKA. Find someone actually doing this in a realistic living situation or stop publishing this garbage.

Delete this trash.

How is this helpful or informative in any way. God damn you guys suck

I will bever understand why some people decide to be born into poor families. It makes no sense.

They're trying to trick us into hate clicking.

50k a year doesn't get you much these days, not like it did 10 years ago.

MarketWatch level trolling right here

Anyone in Detroit could by ten houses with 50000. No need to share.

Starting out, in an apartment your parents OWN

Kudos for the parents. They raised a kid who went to law school, earned a scholarship and has a job. If they have the means of supporting her a bit fantastic. Better than meeting parents who have 3-4 kids and they tell me that they’re “on their own” after high school.

A lot of hate out there. My parents paid for my and my bro’s college (35k/ur) and part of our med school (45k/yr) on their combined 140k salary because they saved, invested and sacrificed. We had limited toys and shitty clothes. US mentality = have kids, responsibility over.

Everyone starts out after college making horrible salaries. You either live with your parents OR find a place you can afford. However, at that age is when you can also save a lot more than when you have a spouse, kids, mortgage payments, school tuitions, etc to pay for

Help from Parents ? So, only the children of the rich deserve a life ....

Lmao lit no one starts out at 50k tho 🧐

You better know how to stretch a dollar and living with roommates

If you’re making 50K a year, have a law degree & still taking help from your parents, they and you have failed each other & yourselves. Grow up, stand up & take responsibility for your life.

It’s the parents fault though. When my kids get out of college, if I am asked to help them so they can get by, then they are living in the wrong area. It’s simple math and common sense.

I don’t begrudge her the advantage, but thanks for letting us know up front that this won’t be useful to the average person.

This is basically trolling.

You don't want to know what my salary was at my first full-time job. Trust me. You do? $635/month. In 1979. It was low then, too, but I could afford beans and rice.

Lol at the dumbasses who didn't choose parents that could pay their rent for them

It is a good way to do from parents. My mom paid my college tuition, I paid my kids' & I told them they should start saving 4 their kids at the time kids are born. Make saving a good habit 4 American people, do not live paycheck by paycheck-- root cause of student loans

Her rent is a fifth of mine. Why is this news?

It goes far. Far away from home to somewhere else more affordable.

Point needs to be taken. Quit living in high supply areas and live in high demand areas.

“Help from parents”

Why are you reposting this dumb misleading article AGAIN? Awful case study- she’s literally floating by nicely because of her parents. I make nearly 50K and live in boston. Try again.

just_a_Falcon a lot like india.

“Help from parents means young person has law degree and didn’t have to work for anything.”

First real job in the entertainment industry: 22K a year in 94...wait/bartend to make ends meet...still don’t know how I was able to even make it.....rent was 525 in a shitty Brooklyn neighborhood. Paid my student loan too...no car....

My parents help with my rent. And I make about the same per year. Could I afford rent on my own? No. The comments here make it seem like I’m supposed to feel bad for being from a family that can help me out. I realize it’s privallaged, but I’ll be damned if I’m shamed for it.

The sole purpose of this article is to troll millennials...

How far does a $50K salary go when you’re starting out? Not nearly enough. This means a recent law-school graduate another $50K from parents just so they can afford the rent in South Boston disputes the fact they have no student debt.

So basically - privileged girl makes ends meet by living in parents rental property for below market rent? Great advice - be born rich or struggle 🤷🏾‍♀️

I stopped reading after 'an apartment her parents own'

wsj make your articles readable to all. You’re not as important as you think you are. Get a life.

First of all, fifty k is already privileged.

Every single one of these stories is bullshit. They all start off debt free and live in their parents garage or something 🙈

So right off the bat your interviewee is a terrible example. her parents, don't just help her they literally own the apartment that she's 'renting.' Is it really that hard to find someone who actually fits the premise for such a space filling article?

Sooooo, they aren't really starting at $50k?

$500 for rent in Southie and then I saw that she’s living in an apartment owned by her parents l o l

boo freaking hoo, starting out at $50k a yr and getting help from the 'rents.

Who starts out with 50k?

this is the exception to the rule, not the reality for most people who just finished a degree

You lost me at help from parents 🙄🙄

The Joint Committee on Cannabis Research 😂

J o k e

NOT FAR in just about any American city

That is one of the proper ways to start out. Hopefully, most parents can make some kind of a contribution to go along with what an intelligent student can muster

It means you need help from your parents. This is the saga for millions of Millennials, despite their GPAs ... professions ... or a Grad degree!

The current educational system in this country is producing wage slaves even before people enter the workforce they have mountains of debt. This model is broken and the people benefiting control the rules of the game. WageSlavery.

50k is vastly better than minimum wage. With or without financial assistance from parents.

Seriously Good for this girl, I’m glad she is doing well but this “article” means nothing at all. She has a job, savings, retirement, a cheap apartment (thx to parents), and no loans. Her life is great. There is no struggle. This is not journalism.

Is.....this article a joke?

50k salary in Boston will buy you a bed... and something resembling walls 😏

Wow, Elon University (out of state for her) and the salary is low given the occupation, however there’s a ton of graduates, so unsure. Like others have stated, this is tone deaf given not having any debt and her parents subsidizing her first place. The average pay is 52k? Wow.

As a graduate student this only confirms the gap growing classes and the fighting between the lower class increasing more everyday. Is there even a chance for closing that gap? Will i ever live without debt ? As of now 40000 in debt is no laughing matter at my $13 a hr job

Move to a place with a lower cost of living

Do that again at 12k

Lmfao, this is the closest thing I’ve ever read to an TheOnion irl

Only her parents make this situation work. Improve cash flow by selling car, dropping huge insurance bill. Use Zipcar if really needed. And why would she want to buy a house with such a subsidized rental situation?!

“Living in a property my parents own is the only way I can afford where I live.” - stupidest article ever written

Aka lessons in white privilege.

What the hell is this crap?

“help from parents”

So being rich before ‘starting out’. Amazing work, guys. tonedeaf

lmao

What the fuck

The struggle is real. No seriously. She actually thinks she’s struggling😂

Let me tell ya, if they went to North Quincy and banked the difference Btween Southie and NQ they be on their way to a down payment

AHAHAHAHA hahahahaha

But wait?! I thought this was a meritocracy!!!!

“With help from parents.” Not far at all apparently

Basically..🇺🇸

Ummm, this is a story (two years ago) about living on 50k in Boston. Yours is a ridiculous, privilege filled farce of a story.

foswi Lady, buy Oreo some toys and treats, dammit! Stop being such a cheap ass. That cat is adorable and deserves them.

cool, but how about if, rather than getting help from parents, they need to support their parents because said parents were wrongfully terminated

How about San Francisco?

This is the only human living in a 2br in South Boston, making 50k, and saving for literally anything. Curious choice for your article subject 🤔

Did Mitt Romney write this?

Now do the article with people without rich parents please

So why the hell hear about the grad w help from parents? What about the majority who don’t have such help?

A whole episode on CitationsPod was devoted to this kind of nonsense article.

lmao who is starting out at 50k

Is this a joke? Is this for real? Like is WSJ trying to be The Onion?

Impossible

Easy clicks

Too weak and incompetent to do it on her own - Bernie Voter

Millionnaire father would also mean zero debt. How to get out of poverty style. Get help from your millionnaire father to avoid student debt. 😜

Real estates policy is the problem.

Say the second sentence again but slowly

Anyone can make it in any city or town in us on $50k. Unless one has unrealistic expectations of lifestyle and poor money management.

What the hell kind of job is it that she has? Get a degree where you can pay the bills. Oh, in doing so you won't be home sitting on the couch with a glass of win and your squeeze, you'll be working on an important project.

Yeah cause my parents can help 🙄

As a soon to be college grad from Boston I can personally tell you that most of the area is so out of reach it’s sad

Help=paid for everything

This is in no way an accurate representation of what $50,000 will get you in Boston. Most people don’t start their professional lives with no student debt, no car payment, and a monthly rent of $500. Home prices go for $700-$1100 a square foot so you can do the math for renting.

$50k is starting salary after law school? 👎🏻

Soooo, you chose to profile the person least likely to have valuable input on the topic at hand?

Classes exist for millennials too. Millennials who want to be able to save for retirement or a home and can't are suffering but the brunt of the economy is felt by Millennials whose parents were poor in an economy where class movement is no longer possible, if it ever was.

Lets see, no debt, free room and board and 50k starting out. lets all see how normalcy looks.

this article just want's me to feel bad for not having rich parents, I guess. Otherwise what's the point?

Ok my dad is a chiropractor can you break it down when your parents don’t pay for everything?

The fuck do you people get out of doing these stories? Is it just to rile people? Shouldn't you be above that?

Are you drunk?

Find a roommate and suck it up.

They could at least be more subtle about this shitty propaganda. But they've been pissing on us for so long I guess some really have started to believe them when they say it's rain.

Can literally skip this entire article if you mention the fact that convienentally she lives in a unit owned by her parents at $500 a month. Yeah, no offense, everything goes out the fucking window after you read that. Lol. (Source: I live in boston and make 50K)

You really think your readers aren't clever enough to tie their own shoes, don't you?

You guys troll poor people at this point right? That’s the motto? If so you’re killing it

Boston resident. Her claim that her rent would be $500 normally in a 2 bed is ridicilous in south boston. That is the most yuppie filled, over priced, garbage bar neighborhood in the city. Probably closer to 2k for a 2 br (1k per)

What’s crazy is that people get paid to write these non sense articles.

A lot further than nothing which is what i had. And I've done a lot since then

$500 got me a makeshift bedroom with no closet and barely any heat in 2011 in Andrew Square...this piece makes me chuckle.

$50K starting salary with a law degree?

$50K in Boston is a starving wage.

These stories only ever have one theme: be born rich

8-9K in checking account, $30 increasing to $75 for retirement, but plans on buying a house in 2-3 years? Ideally without her parents help... she's definitely going to get her parents help

My family was forced to short sell our home in 2009. My parents lost their jobs and struggled to find new ones. My dad, with nothing but SS to his name, is too old to live on his own and lives with me now. I am the one supporting my parent, not the other way around.

It only costs 10 cents to buy a McChicken if your dad pays the other 90

Is this supposed to just be enraging? No doubt her parents bought the apartment just for her

I pay $550 for one bedroom of a two bedroom apartment and she makes twice as much as I do. Where's my article?

Everything is super affordable when someone else is paying, jackasses

What a dumb article. She has rich parents who made all that possible. She would be starving had she not had wealthy parents. An article about the 1% written by the 1%. Epic Fail.

It's always great to get these tells like the phrase 'help from parents' that no one at WSJ knows anyone who actually has to work for a living.

🤔

Why didn’t you just call the article “let them eat cake”?

50k salary is shit

I live with my parents, they gave me a car, they paid for my loans, and I only save $30/month. Pullllease how clueless can you be? Who the hell thought this was a good story?

All i hear is more complaining and poor me crap.cant live off 50k then u should lower your standards and be real

The world’s smallest violin is playing 🎻

Why do all of these stories involve wealthy parents or a trust fund, so what these young people have to live on is much higher than the amount in the headline? Garbage journalism.

So $50k a year goes a long way when someone else pays for your necessities. Who would have guessed; great reporting.

stinerman67 the_tom_burns Recent grad renting an apartment her parents own, paying sub market rate, has a car her parents paid for, and no debt because...yeah, her parents. Lol.

Jesus Fucking Cripes

Is this meant to be facetious? Parents own her apartment? She pays 500/mo for rent? This is not real life for most anyone who would like to explore the opportunities of living in a major metropolitan area.

So... nowhere, really.

I hate u

If a person spends their $$ on their NEEDS - rather than their WANTS ~ $50K can go a long way. If a person with a law degree cannot do 'basic survival' on $50K - they're too dumb to practice law.

Oh ffs.

How far does a 50k salary go when you’re starting out? If you also win the lottery, it can go very far-

-Be born to wealthy parents / Avoid being born to poor parents / “Split” rent from parents property / Talk about your Hulu monthly payment as if that counts as an actual expense / have “hand-me down” car to only use for “errands”. I’m really just mad at my broke ass parents.

So I should have gotten $500 PER MONTH from my parents? Dammit man, where’s my money!!!

$50,000? When you're starting out? I never made that much until I was almost 40.

Quite possibly might be the worst article I’ve ever read. Let me just go back in time and restart with diff parents...

you people are enough to give an atheist hope that hell exists

So the key to financial freedom is having wealthy ancestors? Huh. Ain't that some shit?

Why write these articles?

'Help from parents...'

Yeah it helps a ton

SharpenTheGuillotines EatTheRich

She's saving! She's on the verge of starting a family! Her career is taking off! It's a nice illustration of why it would be good if all students, not just those lucky enough to be born into wealth, could graduate debt-free

Step 1: Have rich parents Step 2: Dont have poor parents Step 3: profit!

Look, I’m glad her parents were able to help. As a future parent, I hope none of us have to worry about that though.

LOL

QuotedReplies

Weird how far you can go with rich parents.

this is absolute garbage “journalism”

So you mean it doesn't go far unless your parents are rich?

it's not really 'starting' when you're standing on the finish line

QuotedReplies please provide.

Far from “starting out”

What is even the point of this?

HER PARENTS OWN HER APARTMENT WHAT THE FUCK.

what if your dad was killed when you were 10 yrs old?

I could live work free if my parents paid for everything. What a plan!

How fortunate to not be born in the cycle of poverty.

“Help from parents”

'HELP FROM PARENTS'

but here on planet earth

Lol ok 😂

Hrmm so what you're telling me is the secret to having more money is to already have lots of money? How have I been doing this wrong for so long?

It may be my poverty brain, but I don’t understand the point you’re trying to make.

Oh my.

Put some pants on!! Your privilege is showing.

How do rich people survive?

The salary is almost entirely disposable income. That's a J. Crew coat which retails for $365.

Lmao

This applies to average Americans how?

Where in Southie? Haha

This article circulates about once every three months with different names and locations. I'm over it.

Invested, lmfao Relatable

I bet she blows 10k of it on West Broadway every Thursday and still gets bailed out by Mom and Dad.

'if your parents pay for all your shit turns out living on an okay-but-not-good salary is fine'

“help from parents”

Faaaaaaaaaaaaaart

so... she's well off, from a well off family?

Why didn’t I think of ordering up a wealthy mom & dad who’d support me so I can live with security and ease? Thanks for the hot tip!

One would hope, as the year 2019 comes to close, that rags would have learned a lesson about publishing these hack pieces. But, alas, here we are again. Enjoy the ratio.

Wall Street journal staying committed to being a fucking joke

Great article, helps show me the mistakes I made in my youth. You know, mostly by choosing to not be born to rich parents. If only I could do it all over...

$3250/month after taxes

I have to assume these stories are plants by pro revolution forces that are deep cover inside neoliberal institutions to foment the anger and inspiration to begin the razing of the establishment

So this has nothing to do with a salary of 50k. It’s just a story about being a child well into adulthood.

So... Not 50k then

Hey cnbc WSJ is jumping in your lane of not understanding how personal finances work.

Is this a joke?

How rich do you have to be to even consider a 'career' doing something you love?

Starting out at 50k, needing help from your parents... and yet PeteButtigieg thinks this person is 1/3 of the way to being “wealthy”.

We started out with $50k in the late 80s. How can this still be a starting salary?

But then it’s not 50k… what the hell is wrong with you
