The Philippine Government has renewed its commitment to “promote, protect, and fulfill” the rights of children on the observance of the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) held recently at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

In a speech, Philippine Chargé d’Affaires Kira Azucena highlighted the country’s efforts in promoting and protecting the rights of children, among them the First 1,000 Days Law, the Special Protection of Children in Situations of Armed Conflict Act, the Philippine Action Plan to End Violence Against Children, and the provision of free education until college through government institutions.

“The Philippines takes this opportunity to renew its solemn commitment to promote, protect, and fulfill the rights of children, and to advance the ideals that brought all countries together 30 years ago to establish this landmark convention for the children,” Azucena said. Before that, the Philippine Mission to the UN, in cooperation with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund , and the Center for Art, New Ventures, and Sustainable Development – Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan jointly launched an exhibit that demonstrates the country’s commitment to create awareness about and advance children’s rights in the international community.

Called “Karapat Dapat: Child Know Your Rights,” the exhibit features an interactive, bilingual book in English and Filipino inspired by the CRC. The book is produced by CANVAS and Ang INK, a Filipino artist group. “In the Philippines, children are valuable members of our society. They take pride of place in every family. Their safety and security are ensured, and their rights and well-being are promoted and protected,” Azucena said.
