A New Jersey legislator has introduced a bill that would require elementary schools to teach kids how to read and write in cursive

A New Jersey legislator says so. Assemblywoman Angela McKnight has introduced a bill that would require elementary schools to teach kids how to read and write in the graceful, flowing loops taught to previous generations as a matter of course. You remember cursive handwriting. It's what we use to sign our names on, say, a check or other legal document. It's fallen out of favor in the digital age, even getting dropped from Common Core standards in 2010.

"Our world has indeed become increasingly dependent on technology, but how will our students ever know how to read a scripted font on a word document, or even sign the back of a check, if they never learn to read and write in cursive?" McKnight said.Even in the days of texting, some research shows cursive still can improve cognitive development, spelling and writing speed.

Cursive should be mandatory in all elementary schools...NO EXCEPTIONS!

When unpacking the standards for what we want students to know, educators focus on the boulders- the rigor and skills that are needed to be a productive, collaborative contributor to society. Ugh, but cursive is realllly pretty...

For what?

Yes, but like to know why is stopped in the first place

Had they stopped? Wasnt aware of it.

Why did we stop teaching this in the first place?

Yes...another language wouldn’t hurt either!!

Probably should learn to use a slide projector and vcr why are people scared of change and technology there are much better things to learn.

And now we know why jersey is jersey

Agree

Elegance never goes out of style. And there is elegance in cursive writing.

While cursing?

I was moved to “special needs” class in first grade when we were just starting to learn cursive and they never tough us cursive in that class so while everyone else learned it, I did not. Luckily for me I don’t need for software development

Yes.

No he didn't

I agree.

I totally agree

Good luck with finding time, among all the testing, and practicing of testing, to work that in.

Oppression! Waste of time and money! Painful torture!

Guess those questioning its need do not see value in basic building blocks in math...science...english/grammar either...sad

GrEaT iDeA

Yes people should be able to write/read in cursive. School’s the only place kids are going to learn that. Not practical to think this will happen at home. There is a progression to learning. Print, write, type. Just like +, -, x, divide. (no symbol) Everything’s not electronic.

Instead of wasting time on cursive spend a little more on the difference between your and you’re.

Wait.....cursive isn't taught anymore Soooo you print your 'signature' or what?

Sounds great

with discussions merits and vetting of each letter And it's USAing of each..

Okay, but is that really the most pressing issue in the US education system right now?

It's actually much better for the brain. Unlike texting

Hopefully there's another bill to require them to learn milk churning and horse shoeing too.

When did they stop. How would they sign their name or fill out a check otherwise

I was taught cursive in the 60s, British school system. 45 years later my kids never learned cursive much to my distress. I had to get over it, hell yeah I can't read their chicken scratch, but teachers are looking at the content of text not penmanship.

I’m surprised at the responses. They teach a lot of things kids don’t necessarily need, but it’s all part of a well rounded education. Improves fine motor skills.

1) bills are paid online 2) the workplace requires technological competence 3)who tf writes in cursive? You writing a constitution or something?

I wish I was taught how to touch-type instead of wasting time in grade 6 doing cursive. Now I can't write at all without doing it at least partly cursive. No one can read it and its slow - not effective or practical for exams or assignments. Let's get with the times already.

FYI: the three realms all use block letters, sanskrit, and Cantonese interchangeably. Do with that what you will.

Now I do agree with that.

At least get the basics.

I Agree. It's payback for when my teacher made us do this in 4th grade. Pay it forward.

I use cursive for my signature, so I guess it isn't totally useless. Wreaks havoc with my OCR software though

I don't see what the harm is. It doesn't take long to learn and kids will be able to sign their name.

I only write in cursive. It’s faster and more professional.

Sure that’s what we need. Let’s teach the kids how to use a slide rule too.

I think it is still important, many older documents are written in cursive. Not to mention the youth of now a days will never know the excitement of actually getting a beautifully written hand letter from a pen pal in the mailbox.

What happened to reading and writing and arithmetic? Some things should be taught no matter how out dated some think they’re become

With so much to teach nowadays, I think it should be introduced and reinforced at home- not school.

Total and complete waste of time.

They should also learn how to be a shoe cobbler, blacksmith and how to build steam locomotives. future PlanAhead

It was standard teaching when I was in school in the 80’s and 90’s. It only happened in the 2000’s when schools actively decided to dumb down children, but you can thank Democrat’s and teachers unions for ignorant children. Too much government in schools rots kids brains.

Should of never been removed!

Like before.

Ok boomers

We don't use it much, but when my son applied for a job at the library, he had to know cursive. Many historical documents are written in cursive and there should always be someone who can read them.

Every state should have such a law. Writing is an import communication skill.

Teach them to code instead

Bringing back ink wells?

Interesting.

Kids should learn cursive !!!

They don't teach cursive in American schools?

Cue the 'OK Boomer' and 'Back in my day' responses...

Make the drag queen story tellers read it..... that should solve that problem

Wow. Stack up more for the underpaid teachers. Cursive is something that can be taught at home.

Yes that’s a good idea to teach the kids for cursive writing.

Kids text now and do not use the English language

Better than forcing the kids to learn about “white privilege” and the 65 different “genders”.

It’s already law in Ohio. My third grader is learning it right now.

Well yah

Its not difficult
