JASON OM, REPORTER: It’s been five years since pro-democracy protests erupted on the streets of Hong Kong but the fallout from speaking out against Beijing continues.

SEBASTIEN LAI: Throughout the years he’s had many attacks both physical in the form of our house getting firebombed, assassination attempt, someone once threw a bucket of pig waste on him during the 2014 protest, pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.As a son growing up, I must say I was completely unaware of it because he didn’t let fear get to him.SEBASTIEN LAI: No, because if your parents aren’t afraid then you’re not afraid - it’s as simple as that.

SEBASTIEN LAI: Essentially the goal is in targeting Apple Daily is to tell all other journalists or anyone who wants to say the truth and criticise the government, that this is what’s going to happen to you.CARRIE LAM, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, HONG KONG : Don't try to accuse the Hong Kong authorities for using the national security law as a tool to suppress the media or to stifle the freedom of expression.

SEBASTIEN LAI: So with the national security law it’s incredibly opaque. A good way to think about is it’s using the legal system as a hammer. LOUISA LIM, UNVERSITY OF MELBOURNE: One of the largest cases involves 47 people who are democracy activists. They’re professors, politicians, writers, and they held this primary poll to decide who to put up for election and for that they were all taken away under the national security law. This is a whole generation of Hong Kongers, the brightest and the best.
