Sen. Bob Menendez speaks with reporters this week as he leaves federal court after another day in his corruption trial in Manhattan. NEW YORK — After sitting through 30 prosecution witnesses testifying at his federal corruption trial, Sen. Bob Menendez called on family this week as his attorneys began making the case that the New Jersey Democrat took no bribes from wealthy businessmen and that his Cuban-refugee parents taught him to stash bundles of money at home.
Menendez, 70, has not revealed whether he will take the stand in his own defense. His first three witnesses were his sister, his sister-in-law and a forensic accountant who told the jury that Menendez withdrew cash from a credit union account in increments of around $400 on more than 300 occasions during a 14-year stretch.
“They have not proven their case,” Menendez said as he exited the courtroom after the prosecution rested Friday. “I worry about your safety and well-being,” Menendez wrote to her in a 2018 text message that his defense team is asking the judge to allow. “My disappointment, however, does not change my love for you. You are the love of my life and hopefully we can live in peace and happiness the rest of our lives.”U.S. District Judge Sidney H. Stein has warned the defense not to turn the trial into a “bad soap opera.
