Miranda Casarez’s attorney said he didn't get access to medical records he needed to make his case.

A judge here has rejected a request for a new trial for Miranda Casarez, the San Antonio woman convicted for her part in the starvation death of her then-boyfriend’s young son in 2021. A Bexar County jury on April 17 found Casarez, 25, guilty of injury to a child causing serious bodily injury by omission for the death of Benjamin “Benji” Cervera, 4. The next day, the panel sentenced her to 25 years in prison. Her attorney, Anthony B. Cantrell, is appealing the conviction.

Starved child in San Antonio cried, begged for food, jurors see in video On Tuesday, state District Judge Kristina Escalona heard three hours of arguments in the 186th District Court before telling Cantrell, “Your motion for new trial is respectfully denied.” At issue were medical records that Cantrell said would prove Casarez took Benji to two doctor’s offices in the months leading up to the boy’s death on Aug.
