That could head off a wave of litigation asking the courts to re-decide thousands of agency actions over the last 40 years. But Chief Justice Roberts said Chevron deference and the legal tests judges have invented to apply it, have become “unworkable.” The decision was met with loud cheers from Republicans and anger from Democrats, who said the Supreme Court had gone “out of control.”

It challenged what is known as “Chevron deference” — a term of art lawyers gave to how courts have treated the 1984 ruling, which involved a fight between the energy giant and the Environmental Protection Agency and its environmental allies.
