The resolution brings to a close a more than decade-long legal battle after Assange released a cache of classified US defence documents alleging war crimes in Afghanistan and Syria.

The highly anticipated hearing for Julian Assange has begun in the US District Court on the island of Saipan.

Mr Assange is sitting in the courtroom wearing a black suit. Behind him is Australia's ambassador to the United States, Kevin Rudd, Australia's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Stephen Smith, and human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson.Assange is expected to plead guilty to one criminal charge but be sentenced to time already served, given the five years he spent in a British prison.

Defence official sought champagne from French company during $1.2 billion munitions contract discussions Assange's journey home will be much longer than his flight back to Australia.
