North Korea has fired a suspected ballistic missile toward waters off its east coast in a show of force about a week after its leader struck a military defence pact with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin that alarmed the United States and its allies.

Before the latest launch, North Korea assailed the US for sending the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier group to the Korean Peninsula for joint training drills that included Japan and South Korea.Australian Ambassador to the United States and former prime minister Kevin Rudd has flown to the US territory of Saipan to meet Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

Australian Ambassador to the US and former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd arrives with Wikileaks founder Julian Assange at the Saipan court. “Whatever has occurred in the past…there’s no doubt Mr Assange has paid a price here,” Mr Marles told ABC Radio on Wednesday. “We’re very pleased that this issue is now moving, and it will be in front of the US courts this morning, and we need to let that process run,” he said.Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles says the party will not expel WA Labor senator Fatima Payman after she voted against her party to support a Greens motion to recognise Palestinian statehood.

“Senator Payman has made clear that she wants to continue to represent the people of Western Australia in the Australian Senate as a Labor senator.”
